A mineral is
defined as any naturally occurring, inorganic solid substance with a
more-or-less definite chemical composition and physical
properties. Rocks are made up of different minerals, and
each mineral contains one or more chemical element, such as
sodium, calcium or iron.
Minerals are
usually found in crystalline form, which reflects the way the
atoms are arranged. If allowed to grow freely, these crystals
form geometrically perfect, regular shapes.
