During the Cretaceous period (65-144 MYA), many large dinosaurs and flying reptiles inhabited the Earth, and placental mammals (mammals with placantas) evolved. These survived the mysterious extinction which wiped out the non-avian dinosaurs and paved the way for the evolution of many new forms of plants and animals.
