Geologists divide the history of the Earth into twelve periods. Click here to find an easy way to remember them all. Each period is characterised by certain flora and fauna, most of which are now extinct, of course. The table below shows you all the periods and how long ago they were in MYA - millions of years ago.

When the periods are arranged like this, they make up what is called the "Geological Column". The further down the table you go, the further back in time you get. The exact dates of period intervals are often revised and the values given should be taken as approximations.
