Fish
skeletons are not especially common fossils, but
their fossilised scales (see right) often turn up in
sedimentary rocks of many ages. These are often
square, rectangular or diamond shaped, and quite
shiny.
Fish were
the first vertebrates, and their fossils
occasionally turn up in rocks from as long ago as
the Ordovician period. The group fish includes
sharks, whose characteristic pointed teeth are
extremely common in some places and are often sold
cheaply in fossil shops. These vary in size from a
few inches to less than a centimetre in length.
