Blastoids are extinct echinoderms that were anchored to
objects in the sea, some with stems. Delicate arms
protruded from around a mouth through which sea. They
can be found in rocks up to Permian age but especially
those from the Carboniferous, when they were most
abundant.
They are
often found with corals, crinoids, sea urchins and
brachiopods, sometimes in crinoidal limestone, but are
less common than all of these in Britain.
